Description of the project:

The subject of the project is research on the intake and status of folate and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the population of Serbia, which entails 1. literature review to identify at-risk population groups with low intake of folate and PUFA, 2. establishment and validation of methods for assessing intake and status , 3. interventional studies on an animal model, 4. determination of the etiopathogenetic, therapeutic and prophylactic effect of PUFA and folate intake in chronic non-communicable diseases on a human model, 5. market research, producer and consumer perception towards foods enriched with folates and PUFA, 6. dissemination of results scientific and general population.

Duration of the project: October 2012 – September 2016

Leading Institution:

Quadram Institute Bioscience United Kingdom

Description of the project:

The main objective of the BACCHUS project was to develop tools and resources that will facilitate the generation of robust and exploitable scientific evidence that can be used to support claims of a cause and effect relationship between consumption of bioactive peptides and polyphenols, and beneficial physiological effects related to cardiovascular health in humans. The IMI team primary explored the effects of aronia-polyphenol rich juice consumption on aggregation and activation of thrombocytes in abdominally obese subjects.

Food-based solutions for optimal vitamin D nutrition and health through the life cycle

Project leader: dr Marija Glibetić

Project number: 613977

Duration of the project:  November 2013-October 2017

Leading Institution: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK – NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND, CORK Address

Description of the project:

ODIN project provided the evidence to prevent vitamin D deficiency in Europe and improve nutrition and public health through food. By establishing an internationally standardized analytical platform for 25OHD, ODIN measured the distribution of circulating 25OHD and describe the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Europe. Using available biobanks and databases from National nutrition surveys ODIN delineated the relative contributions of sun and dietary sources of vitamin D to circulating 25OHD. In support of vitamin D recommendations, ODIN carried out three RCT in pregnant women, children and teenagers and a fourth RCT in ethnic immigrant groups to provide experimental data to specify vitamin D intake requirements.

Low cost technologies and traditional ingredients for the production of affordable, nutritionally correct foods improving health in population groups at risk of poverty

Project leader : Dr. Marija Glibetic, coordinator for the IMI team

Project collaborators:

Romana Novaković, Danijela Ristić-Medić, Morjana Gurinović, Marija Glibetić, Jelena Milešević, Nevena Kardum

Project number:  266331

Duration of the project: February 2011-July 2014.

Leading Institution: ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITA DI BOLOGNA

Description of the project:

CHANCE project defined an innovative strategy based on a socio-economic study of the composition of the most significant EU populations at-risk-of-poverty and verified the relative existing nutritional deficiency via a holistic approach ensured by metabolomics investigations correlating the non-healthy diet to real metabolism alterations. CHANCE adopted a new multidisciplinary approach, leading to nutritional strategies for the prevention of malnutrition in population groups at risk of poverty. CHANCE aimed at considered a new health value-added diet as a whole by developing food products which could act in concert. The synergic collaboration of nutritionists, food chemists, economists and technologists allowed a robust strategy to by pass all barriers to healthy nutrition by the lab-scale development of affordable but nutritionally-rich food products, new packaging and portioning.

Description of the project:

The objective of this project was to further integrate/refine the EuroFIR Food Platform, to improve/support the ways research is undertaken into relationships between food, diets and health in Europe. The focus was on extending application and exploitation of validated food data and tools for pan-European nutrition studies and networked usage, implementation of standards and best practice. This together forms the basis of long-term sustainability through the newly established legal entity EuroFIR AISBL.
