Institute for Medical Research Marks 77 Years of Excellence

On Friday, November 29, the Institute for Medical Research, National Institute of Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, celebrated 77 years of its rich legacy at a formal gathering at the Palace Hotel.

In his opening speech, Dr. Saša Radovanović, the Institute’s Director, welcomed colleagues and partners, emphasizing the importance of collective effort: “The academic community can only rise above individual and group interests, as well as institutional boundaries, through collaboration, ultimately contributing to the betterment of society as a whole.”

He further stressed the need to support researchers by “granting them maximum freedom to pursue their work, encouraging their ideas, and removing obstacles. This is how we create space for science that shapes the future.”

The event also featured speeches by Vukašin Grozdić, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia; Prof. Dr. Vladan Đokić, Rector of the University of Belgrade; and Prof. Dr. Nebojša Lalić, the General Secretary of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Dr. Snežana Tomanović, Assistant Director for Science and Research, presented three certificates of appreciation for outstanding contributions to the Institute’s work. The recipients were Milica Zlatković for her dedication to caring for experimental animals, Jelena Ristić for her role in managing the financial and accounting department, and Dr. Marijana Kovačić for her implementation of protocols on the safe disposal of medical and biological waste in her role as the Institute’s Chemical Safety Advisor.

Dr. Đurđica Jovović, President of the Institute’s Scientific Committee, and Prof. Dr. Ljiljana Gojković Bukarica, Chair of the Institute’s Board, were recognized for their leadership and vision, which left a distinctive mark on this year’s celebration.

Founded in 1947 by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Institute was established to advance medical science and contribute to public health. Today, the Institute conducts fundamental and applied biomedical research, ensuring the implementation of findings and the dissemination of knowledge through scientific, educational, and developmental activities, supported by extensive international collaboration.
