Published 23-10-2025

On October 22, the Institute for Medical Research hosted the Scientific Seminar “Deceased donors: a promising source of hematopoietic stem cells,” bringing together researchers who explorе innovative ways to source and apply hematopoietic stem cells.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Xavier Lafarge, Head of the Department of Cell Therapy and the Stem Cell Bank at Etablissement français du sang – EFS, Nouvelle Aquitaine in Bordeaux, invited by Dr. Aleksandra Jauković, Coordinator of the Group for Hematology and Stem Cells at the Institute for Medical Research.

Dr. Lafarge presented research findings suggesting that bone marrow from deceased donors could become a valuable and safe source of hematopoietic stem cells, with significantly lower ethical and health risks compared to conventional methods using samples from living donors.

During the lecture and discussion, it was highlighted that this approach could increase the availability of stem cells for transplantation and enhance therapeutic protocols.
